Then active duty as an officer in the US Air Force. Goes to the west coast after serving in the army, studies design at the San Francisco Art Institute, photography at San Francisco State College and takes part in legal studies on the then legal drug LSD. Becomes part of the counterculture. 1968 publisher of the "Whole Earth Catalog", a bestseller of the alternative scene. "The Whole Earth Catalog" was the foundation book for alternative lifestyle. Receives the National Book Award for "The Last Whole Earth Catalog" in 1972. In the 1960s, Brand worked on various projects in the Bay Area "Impresario for multimedia performances", worked behind the scenes and as a video cameraman at the "Fall Joint Conference" by Doug Engelbart at Stanford University, the first live multimedia Show with images from different locations played live from computers. Coins the term "personal computer". In 1984, Brand launched the WELL "Whole Earth’ Lectronic Link ", a computer teleconferencing system for the San Francisco Bay area. Brand is a founding member of the "Electronic Frontier Foundation", an organization that supports civil rights and responsibility in the electronic media. In the 90s he worked as an economic consultant for the booming computer industry and co-founded and director of "Global Business Network". He also founded the "GBN Book Club" and is president of "The Long Now Foundation". This organization realizes u. a. the project "The Clock Of The Long Now" - a millennium clock (together with Danny Hillies).</description>
