<description>This lecture focuses on the problem of creating a scripting system to be used for automating, integrating and customizing the computer services supplied by networked applications and operating systems. Existing solutions are typically monolithic: they do not support scripting services that can be used throughout the system. The design of AppleScript illustrates how to overcome these problems by combining dynamic object-oriented language and database technologies in a distributed, internationalizable scripting system. About the Speakers William Cook is the managing technical lead of the AppleScript project. He has a PhD in computer science from Brown University. BEfore moving to product development he researched the semantics of object-oriented languages. Warren Harris has an MA degree in electrical engineering and has worked on integrated knowledge representation and interference engines; object-oriented programming languages and polymorphism and inheritance. Currently he is technical lead of the AppleScript project at Apple. Intended Use Upper-division and graduate-level courses as well as industry seminars in operating systems, programming languages and distributed computing.
